The Rabbitohs, as they are known, or if you like their full team title, South Sydney Rabbitohs are an NRL team located in Redfern, which is a suburb in the south of Sydney, NSW. They are one of the nine teams that are located in the state capital.
Being formed in 1908 they are one of the founding members of the NSW NRL. The club is currently owned by a private company called Blackcourt League Investments Pty Ltd and is owned by the well know actor Russell Crowe and his business partner Peter Holmes a Court.
In 2007 the Rabbitohs won their first three games, kicking of the season with the best record since 1972 and very extremnely competitive in every game. Using the best defences in the seasons competition, South Sydney finished the season strongly making the semi-finals for the very first time since 1989. They unfortuantely then went on to finished the NRL season in 7th position, and they went down to Manly in the playoffs.
As a way of expanding the reach of the NRL and taking the competition global, on 26th January 2008, the South Sydney Rabbitohs played against the Leeds Rhino’s but were unfortunately beaten 24–26 in front of an excellent crowd attendance of 12,000 in Jacksonville at the University of North Florida, this was first time 1st Grade professional rugby league teams from England and Australia have played each other on United States soil.
During the 2008 season the Rabbitohs celebrated their centenary year and in the same year were named the National Trust’s inaugural ‘Community Icon’, this was given as recognition of the teams longeviety and contribution to Australian sport and sporting culture at both national and state levels. In April 2012 the Rabbitohs also became the 2nd club to record 1000 wins in Australian First Grade Football and in the same year the South Sydney Rabbitohs ended the season third, this enabled them to qualify for the finals for the 1st time since 2007 and only the 2nd time since 1989.
